Special Olympics Minnesota’s Person First campaign promotes a new mindset of eliminating generalizations and assumptions by putting the person before their disability label. Person First language does not mean we’re shameful or embarrassed about what makes us who we are. Rather, it’s an objective way of speaking, giving individuals the opportunity to define their own identities.
We think the world would be better if everyone felt included. Language affects attitudes, and attitudes affect actions. We’re changing actions with this grassroots bullying prevention campaign. Let’s shift our language by eliminating the use of the r-word!
